About Kestrel Illustration Studio

Kestrel Illustration Studio is the sole proprietorship of Bill Scavone, an experienced medical and scientific illustrator who has, for over a decade, been creating accurate, informative, and aesthetically pleasing illustrations, as well as developing interactive media for instructional design programs.

In 1998 he received his Master of Arts degree in Medical and Biological Illustration from the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

From 1998 to 2000, Bill was a staff medical illustrator at Med Art & Legal Graphics Co. in Akron, Ohio, creating illustrations and animations for trial exhibits and settlement packages.

From 2000, until its closure in 2010, Bill worked as a graphic user interface/instructional designer at the Interactive Media Laboratory (IML) at the Dartmouth Medical School Department of Community and Family Medicine. The IML produced multimedia educational programs for synchronous and asynchronous distance learning, distributed via CD, DVD, and online. Using a variety of tools, including Halyard (a proprietary, open-source multimedia engine that was developed by programmers at IML, previously as Tamale), Flash, AfterEffects and Lightwave3D, Bill designed screen layouts, interactions, graphics, 3-D models, and animations. Bill also created packaging materials and other print media, from initial concept to pre-press.

From 1997 to the present (first as Scavone Medical Illustration, and then as Kestrel Illustration Studio, LLC) Bill continued to develop projects on an independent contract basis, illustrating a wide variety of scientific and medical subjects, with a great deal of focus on the newest research in cells/microbiology.

He also is a faculty member of the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, Vermont, and the AVA Gallery and Art Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, where he teaches life drawing and other drawing classes. He and his wife, Miriam Horowitz, DVM, are expecting the birth of their first child in the summer of 2011.
